Alumni Bonner Leaders

Christina Romero

Interests and Hobbies:
Some interests of mine include art, dancing, learning, traveling, and meeting new people. As for Hobbies, well I can use some.

Think of a leader you admire. What kind of traits or behaviors do they have?
Most leaders I admire tend to have similar traits. I admire the strong silent leader, those who over advertize their leadership skills and strong voice tend to overpower others. I admire the leader that always makes room for mistakes and growth; someone who is accountable, open, and overall approachable. I admire the leader that does work without wanting the recognition but for the just cause of doing it. The leaders I admire most don’t think of themselves as leaders, just human.

What do you hope to accomplish in the UNM Service Corp Bonner Leader program?
What I hoped to accomplish with my time with the Bonner Leader Program was overall structure and documentation, but most importantly relationship building and support. My goal was to have our Bonner Leader Program (BLP) be a reliable resource to our sites and communities. I hoped that our program and students involved would be known throughout the corps and our communities as helpful resources, I feel for a fairly new program we’ve had a great start and have received great support from various communities and sites, and I hope to see more use of our program through our UNMSC sites.

How do you hope to shape the UNM Service Corps experience as a Bonner Leader?
My first experience with the UNM Service Corps was as a child, about 10 years old. I remember how new the corps was and how close my mentors were; it seemed like a very intimate, powerful experience. Throughout the years our Corps has expanded to 30+ sites with 150+ corps members. I hoped that in some way the BLP could bring back that intimate experience for each corps member so that no one felt as though they slipped under our radar, but rather, felt as though their presence and contribution to our communities was known and appreciated.

Interests and Hobbies:
My interests and hobbies include: being a film buff, current events, history, philosophy, politics, and social justice.

Think of a leader you admire. What kind of traits or behaviors do they have?
Mohandas Gandhi or Nelson Mandela. Both leaders through their use of non-violence were gifted with the ability to inspire others granting their nation independence and equality respectively. Both men were at peace with who they were as an individual enabling them to pursue their cause without needing to obtain power or authority over others.

What do you hope to accomplish in the UNM Service Corp Bonner Leader program?
Since I will be leaving the UNM Service Corps Bonner Leader Program I would like to briefly mentioned what I have gained through the program. Overall I have become a better listener – respectful and grateful for the opinions of others. The Bonner Program pushed me to my limits teaching me how to best manage my time as I juggled its many responsibilities and duties along with my school work. I am more confident in who I am as an individual and what I can bring into the room. But, most importantly the Bonner Program have me the mentors and guidance I needed to succeed in my undergraduate career.

How do you hope to shape the UNM Service Corps experience as a Bonner Leader?
The Bonner Leader Program will continue to evolve and better serve students and community as it continues to develop the future of community organizers/leaders. Every leader brings their own abilities, skills, and characteristics to the table. With each new year the Bonner Program takes on a new shape reflecting those who currently serve within it. Despite its many shapes, the Bonner Program sticks to its main pillars of leadership development, academics, and community engagement through its use of projects and initiatives. The Bonner Leader Program has been a defining moment in my personal development and I will forever be grateful for its existence, it is sad yet exciting to be leaving the program but I cannot wait to see how it develops in the years ahead.
